Automotive MLCC Market Overview:

Automotive MLCC Market size was valued at USD 2,802.33 Million in 2021, registering a CAGR of 5.4% during the forecast period (2022-2030), and the market is projected to be worth USD 4,324.93 Million by 2030.

Automotive MLCC is a Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor, an electronic device to control the stable current flow in electronic circuits. It is also known as a chip monolithic ceramic capacitor.

The Automotive MLCCs have exceptional attributes including flexibility at low cost, the ability to withstand high voltages, shape, or size, and are considered to be most dependable. Furthermore, the most important attribute that has resulted in the widespread adoption of MLCC is the ability to store multiple elements into a single package. Each MLCC has an end number of layers, and each layer performs as an individual component. This has reduced the usage of additional elements in the circuitry. Automotive MLCC performs as the center of all the industrial innovations that happened in the last decade. Also, they are considered as one of the enablers of innovations in energy storage, consumer electronics, and telecommunications.

Further, Automotive MLCC has impacted advanced technologies, like 5G, IoT, and EVs. Also, these advanced technologies are extremely dependent on the accessibility of MLCCs. This has driven the organizations to align the production capacities and product lines, to fulfil the requirements of these advanced technologies.

Moreover, MLCCs are used in various devices including tablets, smartphones, washing machines, and automobiles among others. In the automotive industry the MLCCs are used in electronic control units (ECU), engine control modules (ECM), battery management systems, infotainment systems, and smart cruise control systems among others.

Market Dynamics:

Driver:

The automotive grade MLCCs have high temperature resistance, high capacitance, are easy to surface-mount, and can withstand high voltages. Therefore, they have turned out to be perfect components for EV subsystems and electronics. The key factor driving the demand for automotive MLCCs is the requirement of high voltage capacitors inside the control units of EVs. The configuration of basic powertrains in electric vehicles comprises of invertor, electric motor, and high voltage battery. The efficiency of the powertrains in electric vehicles is highly dependent on the efficiency of DC/DC convertors. The automotive MLCCs play a vital role in smooth and efficient functioning of the DC/DC convertors. Moreover, the powertrains in EVs are placed at very high voltages, and thus manufacturing of EVs requires capacitors that can withstand high voltages. Therefore, the manufacturing of EVs require a large number of automotive MLCCs.

The key players involved in manufacturing of automotive MLCCs are manufacturing products specifically for applications in electric vehicles, which is driving the market growth. For instance, in June 2021, Murata one of the key players, manufactured MLCCs with metal terminals having capacity of 630 Volts with three different sizes ranging between 3216M, 3225M and 5750M, which are able to charge lithium-ion batteries, and are specifically designed to cater the increasing demand from EV manufacturers.

Restraint:

The equivalent series resistance value is one of the key performance parameters for DC-link capacitors. The lower ESR of a capacitor depicts higher ability of the capacitor to smooth out the high frequency voltage disturbances that pass through the powertrains. The electrolyte of the polymer capacitors is solid which is made from conductive polymers. Therefore, the capacitors are more compact and are leakage proof.

Moreover, the polymer capacitors have lower ESR values than that of MLCCs, making it more suitable for applications in vehicle powertrains. For instance, the polymer capacitors possess a ESR value as minimum as 10 mΩ.  Moreover, the polymer capacitors tend to have higher capacitance values than the MLCCs. In order to achieve a certain capacitance value, multiple MLCCs are required to be connected parallel to each other, which can be replaced by a single polymer capacitor.

Therefore, owing to factors such as higher capacitance and lower size, the polymer capacitors are restraining the growth of North America, Europe, and APAC automotive MLCC market.

COVID-19 Impact:

The Covid- 19 has a severe impact on global manufacturing companies including automotive companies. The impact was due to the supply chain disruptions, unavailability of the workforce, and reduced capital spending. Further, the market was disrupted due to chip shortages as chips are used in automated systems of a car. The lockdown forced companies around the world to impose shutdowns to reduce the virus spread. For instance, Murata Manufacturing Co. temporarily closed factories in Japan on 26th June 2020. Another key player Taiyo Yuden Co temporarily closed factories in Malaysia on 29th May 2020 impacting the production of MLCC and disrupting the global electronic device production.

Furthermore, the automakers also took a step back in developing autonomous vehicles. For instance, Volvo has planned a fully autonomous vehicle (Level 4 AV) by 2024 but due to covid, the company extended the date to 2027. Similarly, Argo and Ford also delayed their project of robo taxis.
