Typically, UV tapes provide strength and protection to the fragile wafer in the fabrication process during manufacturing and shipment. UV-curable back-grinding tape have applications in Wafer backgrinding during the semiconductor fabrication process. When semiconductors are fabricated their thickness is about 700 mm. But the finished silicon wafer is only 300 mm thick. The initial thickness is important for mechanical stability and strength during the production process. But this level of semiconductor’s thickness will make modern devices extremely bulky thus reducing the size of semiconductor wafers is crucial. Hence semiconductor chips are mounted on UV tapes and then the backgrinding process is initiated which reduces the thickness. Why are UV tapes used? Because they have extremely good adhesive properties which perfectly holds the chip at their place and when they are exposed to UV light they loss their adhesive properties making detachment easy without any mechanical damage to the chip. This application makes UV tapes absolutely essential in the semiconductor industry.
